Anonymous sources who are extremely well-informed about Twitter leaked on Monday that Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is stepping down as CEO. Shortly afterwards, the company officially confirmed the resignation in a statement.

Jack Dorsey will take over as CEO, succeeded by Parag Agrawal, who joined the company in 2011 as a software engineer and became CTO in 2017. "I have decided to leave Twitter because the company is ready to be run by someone other than its founder” – said Dorsey said in a statement. "I have deep trust in Parag, the CEO of Twitter. His work over the past 10 years has earned that trust. I am deeply grateful for his skill, heart and soul. It is time for him to become a leader.." The former CEO plans to stay on Twitter's board for the next six months to help with the transition before leaving the company altogether.

Jack Dorsey has led Twitter for the past six years, alongside Square an electronic payment technology company. From Engadget shareholders have already indicated in 2020 that they would like to see someone at the helm of Twitter who is only involved in the social platform's affairs.

"It was difficult for me, of course. I love this company, the company, all of you. I am sad and happy at the same time. There are not many companies that rise to this level, and not many founders choose their company over their ego. I know it was the right move", Dorsey told his colleagues in an email.
