A few days ago, Instagram started testing a feature that alerts users to pause if they've used the site too much.

Following a sharp rise in negative voices against Instagram in recent months, the photo-sharing site has pulled back in several areas and has apparently started to work on resolving the controversial issues. The story began back in September, with a leak scandal in which a former Facebook employee, Frances Haugen, disclosed serious internal documents. The leaked internal documents revealed that Facebook (now Meta), which owns Instagram, was aware that Instagram was having a negative impact on the mental health of young people.

In the aftermath of the gigantic scandal, Instagram has taken a noticeable step back in several areas, including indefinitely have stopped with the development of Instagram for children, which has sparked a major outcry, saying it is particularly dangerous to children's mental health and privacy, and there are serious legal and ethical concerns about the flood of advertising on the photo-sharing site. Instagram's Adam Mosseri recently announced a new feature to try to control Instagram addiction.

In practice, the new feature will allow users to decide whether they want to turn on the feature, which will remind them to take a break after 10, 20 or 30 minutes if they have spent too much time on the site. As indicated in the TechCrunch article also detours, as the alert is optional, not mandatory, and is mostly a sham measure on Instagram's part.

The new feature is already being tested and, if all goes according to plan, will be available to the public in December.
