Earthquake prediction in Android 13 as in MIUI

You've probably heard of the earthquake warning feature. Google announced at Google I/O 2022 Android 13 operating system. There have been some minor changes to the operating system since then, but they are minor. Earthquake warning is a newly introduced feature of the operating system. Let's take a closer look at how it works and what it actually does!

Although this is a new feature in Android 13, earthquake alerts are not new to some. Xiaomi and some other mobile phones have built-in earthquake alerts. The following feature was recently added to Xiaomi Indonesia's MIUI Indonesian ROM but was introduced in China as early as 2019. Xiaomi says the feature will provide useful notifications about seismic activity in Indonesia that could cause an earthquake. The magnitude and location of the activity will warn users to avoid or escape from the aforementioned earthquakes.

Google has implemented a similar solution. The first part of the warning feature will be a mobile phone that will use the built-in accelerometers of current smartphones. It can predict the occurrence of an earthquake by detecting relevant changes. If the phone detects an earthquake, it will send a signal to Google's earthquake detection service, which will indicate the possible location. The server then combines various information to determine whether or not an earthquake has occurred. It also determines where and how big it will be. After reviewing the data, an alert is sent to users.

This is not always effective, of course, as tremors propagate relatively quickly, and there may not be time to take precautions other than checking the message. Of course, if you are about to get into an elevator and the notification arrives at that moment, it can be really useful to help you make a decision in the moment.

But what is particularly interesting are the forecasts. If we can predict the situation well in advance of the event, precautions can be taken to reduce the number of victims and the material damage caused by these disasters.
