Xiaomi has been leading the Indian market in smartphone sales since 2017, ahead of the perennial runner-up Samsung. India's total mobile phone market fell by 16% in Q1 2022, at Xiaomi's expense. The main reasons for the decline are supply constraints, high inventory levels and a slowdown in consumer demand due to high inflation.

Due to supply constraints, smartphone shipments in India declined by 1 percent year-on-year to reach over 38 million units in the first quarter of 2022, compared to Counterpoint Research Market Monitor according to.

Chinese brands had a 74 percent market share in the first quarter of 2022, with Xiaomi leading the market with a 23 percent market share, although its shipments were down 13 percent year-on-year. Multiple 5G model launches and aggressive promotions have propelled the Chinese brand to the top spot. It was also second in 5G smartphone shipments.

Samsung reclaimed second place with a 1 percent annual decline. It also remained the best-selling 5G smartphone brand in India for the second consecutive quarter. The launch of the S22 series and the revamped A-series and M-series boosted growth. The South Korean tech giant also maintained its leadership in the affordable premium segment.

In March 2022, the Galaxy S22 Ultra 74% achieved a sales share of 100,000 Indian rupees (~$464e). In addition, Samsung has a market share of 38% in the segment of 30,000 Indian rupees (~140e Ft).

Samsung aims to increase its market share in India to 40% by the first half of 2022.
